Hypnosis is a proven technique used to relieve stress and anxiety. While most people associate hypnosis with a trance-like state, hypnosis actually helps participants enter a deep state of relaxation. During hypnotherapy sessions, patients experience this state of relaxation in both their mind and their body. Not only is hypnotherapy helpful for achieving a calmer mind, but the latest research indicates that hypnosis has an impact on different regions of the brain.

Let’s take a look at the impact of hypnotherapy for stress reduction in the workplace.

Scientific Proof

Research conducted at Stanford University Medical provides scientific evidence that while under hypnosis, something happens in the brain that does not ordinarily happen. In fact, in scanning the brains of patients while they were hypnotized, scientists were able to see the neural changes associated with hypnosis.

During the study, researchers scanned the brains of 57 people during guided hypnosis sessions similar to those that might be used clinically to treat anxiety, stress, trauma, or pain. The images revealed that distinct areas of the brain experience altered connectivity and activity while someone is hypnotized.

“Now that we know which brain regions are involved, we may be able to use this knowledge to alter someone’s capacity to be hypnotized or the effectiveness of hypnosis for problems like pain control,” said the study’s senior author, David Spiegel, MD, professor and associate chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

The Prolonged Impact of Stress & Anxiety

According to recent surveys conducted by the Global Organization for Stress, stress levels significantly impact the work place:

– 75% of adults reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month and nearly half reported that their stress has increased in the past year

– 50% of adults admit they need help to cope with stress

– 75% of adults think work is more stressful than a generation ago

Stress affects people in different ways. Some thrive on it, while others find it impossible to cope. While stress is common in daily life, when left unchecked it can wreak havoc on our health, as well as our personal and professional lives. Too much stress can lead to a large variety of psychological, physical, behavioral and emotional problems. Common symptoms of stress and anxiety include:

– Mood swings

– Problems with concentration

– Insomnia

– Depression

– Low self-esteem

– Loss of sex drive

– Chronic pain

– Upset stomach

– Feeling on edge

– Diarrhea

– Heart palpitations

– Loss of energy

– And more
